2018 Accomplishments

 Accomplishments---Program Year 2017-18 

Entertaining programs and presentations at member dinner meetings; enhanced attendance; examples:

Col Richard Kirk, USAF, Ret., speech on POW and life experiences

Presentation of ‘Beyond Glory’, a play based upon Medal of Honor stories

Jet Propulsion Laboratory presentation on NASA Mars exploration

Singer Paulette Rockir and husband performance of ‘oldies and goodies’

Teacher Fredi Lajvardi’s inspiring story of underwater robotics in “Spare Parts”

Using ‘closed captioning’ in dinner presentations to support hearing-impaired folks

Robust scholarship program; granted $24,900 in scholarships to 16 students spring 2018

Raised a record $37,000 through April 2018 fund raising auction dinner

Engaged with long-term business donors; encouraged chapter member donations

Current Scholarship Fund balance is $72,000 before spring distributions

Plan scholarship grants in spring 2019 of $34,000

In past six years, Scholarship Fund distributed over $120,000 in 76 grants

Received $6,250 FY-2017-18 from MOAA Military Family Initiative/Homes for Heroes

Set up a ‘grants’ committee and program; no ‘overhead,’ all funds distributed

Identified needy recipients through Veterans’ Court, VA social workers, Luke AFB Chaplain, First Sergeants, and Airman Readiness Center, AZ Coalition for Military Families, and others

Donated $2,000 in turkeys and commissary cards, and 426 ‘in kind’ canned/boxed food items to Luke AFB enlisted families

Donated $4,250 in cash to seven needy veterans, disabled vets and retirees for medical debts, mortgage, rent, car and house repairs, etc.

Assisting families and vets in financial distress gratifies and rewards us

Selected by MOAA Foundation for 2018-19 a Community grant of $3,750

Our treasurer enhanced greatly the Luke Chapter accounting and ledger system; she never stops improving

Our legislative liaison reports Arizona legislative activities to members and encourages grass-roots participation in legislation of interest to the military community

MOAA awarded Luke Chapter MOAA the Five Star Levels of Excellence Award for 2017

Website awarded Five Star rating in the Harris Communications Award for 2017

NewsGram awarded Five Star rating in the Harris Communications Award for 2017

Webmaster substantially upgraded the Luke Chapter website at:

Provides members access to current events, newsletters, minutes of board meetings, Presidents message, historical information, updated personal data and contact info, etc.

Provides recruitment and application process online

For first time, webpage offers PayPal or credit card payment capability for renewal of chapter dues, donations to Scholarship Fund, and for chapter dinner reservations

Website allows email ‘blast’ to all members or selected names

Member contact information available to all members

Outstanding recording secretary keeps our minutes up-to-date and timely

Donated funds to five veteran/active duty charitable organizations

Initiated first annual “Toys for Tots” program and repeated in December 2018

Corporate ‘self-governance’ is outstanding

Board meeting minutes accurately record board’s decisions and discussions

Annual audits, member surveys, and self-assessments

Updated robust Operations Manual and Strategic Plans

Maintain non-profit Arizona corporations, Luke Chapter and Scholarship Fund, to support income tax-exemption; donations to the Fund are tax deductible

Bylaws are up to date

All officer and board positions are staffed

Tax returns filed timely

Both corporations in ‘good standing’ with the Arizona Corporation Commission

Purchased comprehensive general liability insurance, a MOAA ‘best practice’

Supported thirteen local JROTC programs with active high school liaison and MOAA medals

Chaplain reaches out with energetic pastoral program, and blessings in our meetings

Active in personal affairs with briefing to members on the new website and team briefing on end-of-life and estate planning

Chapter Historian maintains and organizes chapter memorabilia, photos and other documents of continuing interest to all members
